Every morning since I was 8 years old, I have watched ESPN’s “Sportscenter.” It’s a routine that I and many other sports fans do to stay updated with the sports world and get information on the latest news and scores from the previous night. Recently, on February 8, Sportscenter as I know and love took a turn for the worse. ESPN added an additional two live hours to our beloved channel. It’s a “fun” new show called Sportscenter AM and it literally is an embarrassment to the entire network.

When we first got told about the idea it didn’t sound so bad. Fun, revamped, fast-paced all sound like things that early-morning viewers would definitely see as a positive since the people watching have work and school. The only thing they forgot to mention is after the first 20 minutes of the show, there will hardly be any sports. I watch in disappointment as I see fans in silly outfits and owners holding their dogs in baby carriers at the game instead of actually showing highlights of the games. I’m pretty confident in saying that 80 minutes of the 3 hour long program are spent NOT on sports. On top of all this, they do not have very likeable people hosting it. The two new women, while pretty, are very annoying. They make me cringe at most things they say. While the men are familiar faces, they do not have that same comfortability factor as Stan Verrett and Neil Everett.

I’m not entirely sure why they would mess up a formula that has been working for decades. They said they want to make it more “entertaining” but honestly I’m really upset with how they’re doing it. I think they are trying to target a female demographic. Mostly showing top-plays and cute babies in the stands are things that the traditional Sportscenter fans haven’t asked for. Don’t get me wrong, I don’t have a problem with them trying to get more women watching the show, (I mean, it is a business) but I don’t want them to stray away that kept Sportscenter as one of the most watched shows for the past 36 years.

Honestly, I probably wouldn’t stop watching the show either. It’s so bad that it makes me laugh every morning. The things they put on their make me stare and wonder why in the world they would ever put that on a sports show. Sportscenter as we knew it is gone for the time being (in the morning anyway). The pot mixed with all these terrible ingredients made a something that is absolutely disgusting. I wish I was able to explain what I’m talking about better, but trust me, just watch it once and you will understand my frustration and thousands of others who feel the same way.
